Keeping Healthy While Solo Travelling

It doesn’t matter whether you are in your own country or travelling overseas – there are several things to keep in mind to keep healthy, particularly when you are a solo  traveller:

1. Sleep Routine: Don’t change your sleep routine. Try to keep within your normal hours. Take your pillow from home with you. It will help you have a better sleep.

2. Hydrate properly: Drink plenty of water particularly if you are doing more walking than normal. Make sure that your water is bottled unless you are in your own country. Carrying a bottle with a charcoal or similar filter is an excellent addition to your suitcase or day backpack.

3. Pack for being more active than normal:  Take a small backpack for day excursions. Wearing it on your back helps with your posture and keeps both your hands free to navigate stairs etc. Pack comfortable shoes.

4. Eat Well: Don’t vary your normal food intake or the times that you would normally eat. Watch your portion sizes. Be careful with food that is from markets and while it is important to eat fresh, wash all fruit and vegetables before you eat them.

5. First Aid and Medications: Make sure that you carry your medications with you if you are travelling by transport where you are removed from your luggage. Keep medications that you would need for the day on you at all times. Carry a list of your medications from your doctor. Pack a small first aid kit to cover blisters, upset tummies, headaches, and bites or stings. Keep it with you at all times.

6. Choose your accommodation carefully: Thoroughly research your destination, including local customs, health concerns, and any safety issues. Having a well-planned itinerary can alleviate stress and ensure a smoother journey. Check accommodations reviews, is it a safe place to leave or enter at night, is it central to transport and everything you need or planning to see. I also try to find accommodation with a kitchenette attached so that I can at least have my breakfast or lunch where I stay.

7. Stay Active: Incorporate physical activity into your itinerary, such as walking tours, hiking, or yoga classes. Staying active not only promotes physical health but can also boost mood and energy levels while traveling.

8. Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable in any situation. Avoid risky behaviours and be cautious when interacting with strangers.

9. Stay Connected: Keep in touch with friends or family back home by regularly checking in. Sharing your itinerary and contact details with trusted individuals can provide peace of mind and assistance in case of emergencies.

10. Practice self-care: This includes getting enough rest, managing stress, and taking breaks when needed. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation, journaling, or indulging in spa treatments, and take lots of photos of your holiday.

11. Seek Community: I can recommend joining group tours, workshops, or classes as a way to meet fellow travellers and locals. Engaging in social activities can provide companionship and support while exploring new destinations.

12. Stay Informed: I advise staying up to date on travel advisories and local news, especially regarding health concerns or safety issues in the destination. Encourage using reliable travel apps or websites for real-time information and assistance

Being well prepared is important, especially if you are travelling alone. Get out there in the world and enjoy your travels.
